GM = Game Meditation?

There’s a particular type of state of mind.

Folks who meditate often experience it.

You can also find it during your day. For me, I get there when writing. For some, it’s while playing sports, playing music or playing with their kids.

(Note the way play keeps popping up there…)

It’s when you’re fully in the moment, yet somehow with an eye on the future. Your mind goes quiet and you can simply focus on what you’re doing.

The best performers in the world experience this.

So does anyone who’s in the zone. A video game that’s at the perfect challenge level for this will do it too.

That’s what being a GM is like for me. There’s so much to track, plan for and react to, that there’s little time for distractions, thinking too much or ruminating.

It doesn’t take me long to enter the zone, then stay there – barely interrupted – for a few hours at a time.

Entering this state is good for you. That’s lucky, because it feels so good that I’d do it even if it wasn’t.

Of course, part of that is being able to rise to the challenge. If something is too difficult, you might bounce off it rather than immerse yourself in it.

That’s why I wrote GM Virtues. Focus on these and your GM skills will improve, your games will be more fun – for you and the players – and you might just find yourself in a blissful state of focused meditation.

It’s available as a gift to anyone on my email list, so why not give it a read. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can do that quickly and easily here:
